Frequently Asked Questions

A Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is a graduate-level nurse who provides psychiatric-mental health care to individuals across the lifespan. The role of the PMHNP is to assess, diagnose, and treat individuals who struggle with psychiatric and/or substance use disorders. This can include helping individuals cope with eating disorders, ADHD, anxiety, substance abuse, depression, and bipolar disorder.

The PMHNP also serves as an educator to patients, families, and medical peers in advancing the idea that mental health is a fundamental component of health care. Forming a strong therapeutic bond with patients and families is the foundation of the PMHNP’s psychiatric practice.

This initial visit is called an initial psychiatric intake and will involve all sorts of questions that will help your practitioner understand you and your situation. It also gives you an opportunity to ask the PMHNP any questions you have about your psychiatric care and the plan going forward. As part of the comprehensive treatment plan, PMHNP’s often communicate and collaborate with other key members of the individual’s treatment team, including family, therapists, dietitians, and primary care physicians.

Mental health conditions can profoundly affect an individual’s life, making it difficult to function at work, school, or at home. When you reach out for help, the PMHNP will work with you to understand your symptoms and develop a treatment plan that meets your needs. The goal is to identify any factors that may be triggering or worsening your symptoms.

The benefits of seeking the help you need include:

  1. Improved mood and daily functioning in life.
  2. Improved communication and interpersonal skills.
  3. Increased confidence and self esteem.
  4. Greater insight and self-awareness.
  5. Greater insight and self-awareness.
  6. Connection with others and establishment of solid relationships, based upon mutual trust and support .
  7. Development of healthy coping skills and decision-making skills.
  8. Improved ability to problem-solve and take control of your life.

Every mental health clinic is different, but most offer a variety of services, including psychiatric evaluations, medication management, individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy.

At Kirsten Book LLC, I provide psychiatric medication management and psychotherapy treatment for substance abuse, ADHD, anxiety, eating disorders, depression, and bipolar disorder, etc. I also facilitate eating disorder and mood disorder therapy groups to help individuals feel apart of the solution, and to decrease any loneliness that may accompany a mental health disorder.

If you are not sure what services you need, I can help you. Visit and complete the new patient questionnaire to begin the process of scheduling an appointment.
