Does your child eat only a few specific foods? Avoid entire food groups because of texture or smell? Become anxious or overwhelmed at mealtimes?
It may be more than typical picky eating.
Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is a serious eating disorder that affects children, teens, and adults. Unlike other eating disorders, ARFID is not about body image or wanting to lose weight.
Children with ARFID may:
• Have a very limited list of “safe” foods
• Refuse foods based on texture, color, smell, or temperature
• Fear choking, vomiting, or getting sick from food
• Experience stress, anxiety, or meltdowns around meals
• Struggle with growth, nutrition, or low energy
As parents, it’s easy to hear:
“They’ll grow out of it.”
“They’re just stubborn.”
“They’re just picky eaters.”
But for many families, mealtimes are exhausting, emotional, and isolating.
The good news?
Early support and understanding can make a huge difference.
With the right medical, nutritional, and therapeutic care, children with ARFID can expand foods, reduce anxiety, and build healthier relationships with eating.
If this sounds familiar, trust your instincts and talk with your pediatrician or a feeding/eating disorder specialist.
Your child is not being difficult, and you are not alone. ![]()
