When “Picky Eating” Is More Than Picky Eating: Understanding ARFID

💙 Does your child eat only a few specific foods? Avoid entire food groups because of texture or smell? Become anxious or overwhelmed at mealtimes?

💙 It may be more than typical picky eating.

💙 Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is a serious eating disorder that affects children, teens, and adults. Unlike other eating disorders, ARFID is not about body image or wanting to lose weight.

💙 Children with ARFID may:

• Have a very limited list of “safe” foods

• Refuse foods based on texture, color, smell, or temperature

• Fear choking, vomiting, or getting sick from food

• Experience stress, anxiety, or meltdowns around meals

• Struggle with growth, nutrition, or low energy

💙 As parents, it’s easy to hear:

“They’ll grow out of it.”

“They’re just stubborn.”

“They’re just picky eaters.”

💙 But for many families, mealtimes are exhausting, emotional, and isolating.

💙 The good news?

💙 Early support and understanding can make a huge difference.

💙 With the right medical, nutritional, and therapeutic care, children with ARFID can expand foods, reduce anxiety, and build healthier relationships with eating.

💙 If this sounds familiar, trust your instincts and talk with your pediatrician or a feeding/eating disorder specialist.

💙 Your child is not being difficult, and you are not alone. 💙
